Having a productive day requires planning. It doesn’t have to be a big plan but putting pen to paper and having your most important tasks in front of you will give you a visual on what needs to be accomplished. A productive day doesn’t always mean getting a lot of work done, it means knocking the most important tasks off your list.

We all know what does not work – waking up last minute, rushing to get ready and then possibly getting to the office late if traffic is heavy. Starting your day off rushed and panicky will eat away at your morning and attitude.

So, what now?

  • Twas the night before work – When all through the house, not a creature was stirring, only my mouse. Some of us can’t seem to get anything done because there is so much to do, you don’t know where to start. Organizing your schedule the night before allows you to have a plan in place before you even wake up. We suggest you write down the five most important tasks you need to accomplish the next day and prioritize them. You will leave your office knowing you have a strategy in place for the next day.
  • Put a great morning plan in place – One that works for you that is realistic and attainable. I wake up a solid two hours before I need to walk out the door in order to sneak in a workout, shower, and drink a cup or two of coffee. I value my morning quiet time and if I don’t get it, my day is not the same. I am out the door by 5:15 in order to get to work by 5:45. I am not rushed and it allows me quiet time at the office as well before others arrive.
  • Focus on your list and don’t allow others to disrupt your plan – You are at the office early and it’s nice and quiet. This is the perfect time to knock out the first and biggest task you own. Depending on the task, you might be able to complete it before the next person even arrives. However, if your day involves people interrupting your flow, you will need to stand firm and ask them to come back when you are done or schedule time later in the day. Try hard not to look at your phone while working. Social media can be the biggest time waster of all and it’s important to stay focused. Set aside time to review your social media if necessary and that will allow you to stay on task.
  • Take your productivity plan home with you – Putting a plan in place for what needs to be done at home will also help with the plan at work. Worrying about what needs to be done at home while at work is another productivity hijacker. Productivity and organization go hand in hand. Implement your strategy and try hard to stick with it for at least two months in order to see a difference. Sometimes it is a lifestyle change, but one that can be a game changer for your career.
